Uzbekistan

We didn't spend a lot of time birding in Uzbekistan, but whenever I did get the chance I captured the birds we encountered, especially on our trips to the Khorezm region and to a lake called Tudakul near Bukhara.

Khorezm

These are pictures from our trip to the Khorezm region in Uzbekistan which is home to a lot of historic forts that were built along the Silk Roads.

Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (Merops persicus)

These bee-eaters were shot in a place called the Kylyz Kala in the Khorezm region of Uzbekistan. These individuals were noisily frolicking around the fort in what seemed like territory defense.

House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)

Hundreds of sparrows were nesting in the holes in the the Kylyz Kala.

Desert Wheatear (Oenanthe deserti)

This Desert Wheatear was shot near another fort called the Ayaz Kala.

European Roller (Coracias garrulus)

On the same trip we spotted this European Roller on an electric line on the way to the Khorezm forts.

Bukhara

Little Tern (Sternula albifrons)

From Bukhara, we did a day trip to a salt water lake called Tudakul where we saw a bunch of terns. This is one I was able to photograph and identify with any confidence.

Laughing Dove (Streptopilia senegalensis)
