Pokaran And Khichan

One of the biggest perks of my work with BNHS is being able to witness the conservation and research of endangered species at close quarters. This trip to Pokaran and Khichan - both in western Rajasthan - took me to some fascinating landscapes and gave me glimpses of two species that I got to see for the first time.

The Great Indian Bustard

Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps)

This sighting occurred at a spectacularly preserved grassland enclosure near a town called Ramdevra in Western Rajasthan.

Demoiselle Cranes of Khichan

Demoiselle Crane (Grus virgo)

Yet another lifer for me on this trip. Khichan is now almost synonymous with Demoiselle cranes.

Others...

Common Babbler (Argya caudata)

Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse (Pterocles exustus)
